I am an historian for various ministries in this area. A century and a half ago, a house stood near this spot, about 40 yards to the west. A Protestant minister and his wife lived there. They had built it as part of an Underground Railroad to help slaves escape during the Civil war. In 1888, on May the 14th, the house mysteriously burnt down, and the minister was killed in his sleep. When the community organized to build a church, they saw this minister to be the very seed of their faith. His wife donated the land and suggested that her husband be buried below the chapel to be its spiritual foundation. In the Depression, this chapel was turned into a mission, and the minister's remains apparently were neglected. Forgotten.
