Petty thief Rene Noir steals a mysterious golden key from Monsieur Le Clef's locksmith shop, uses the key to escape from police, magically transporting himself 100 years into the past. Encountering angry townspeople, he escapes into a building through an open window. There he encounters Marie Antoinette, who drugs him because of his remarkable resemblance to her husband, Louis XVI, who gets beheaded the following day.
