Friday. Opening night of Word Fest, the university's annual three-day "gabathon" for writers and wanna-bees. Professor Grady Tripp picks up his editor and his editor's new transvestite friend at the airport. At Walter Gaskell's party, Gaskell's wife Sara, with whom Grady has been having an affair, tells Grady that she's pregnant. Grady's creative writing student James Leer steals Marilyn Monroe's jacket from Walter's bedroom, then shoots Walter's dog when he attacks Grady.

Saturday. Second night of Word Fest, the university's annual three-day "gabathon" for writers and wanna-bees. Aftter the police come looking for James Leer and Grady discusses Sara's pregnancy with her in her greenhouse, Grady takes James to dinner, calling his grandparents to come pick him up. Later, he and his editor Terry Crabtree drive to James' grandparents' house and break him out, leaving Walter's dead dog Poe in James' bed.

Sunday. Third night of Word Fest, the university's annual three-day "gabathon" for writers and wanna-bees. Sara visits Grady, who discovers his car is missing. He and Terry track his car down to the man they call Vernon Hardapple's business, Kravnik's Discount. Grady takes his unfinished manuscript with him, which blows away in the wind when Terry accidentally drives into a wall. Later, Walter announces Terry Crabtree's intention to publish James Leer's novel The Love Parade.
