Identical twins Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore return to Clarksdale, Mississippi, after spending seven years in Chicago. They open a juke joint for the local Black community. On the joint's opening night, their younger cousin Sammie's music is transcendent, unknowingly summoning spirits of both past and future to join the crowd, as well as Irish-immigrant vampire Remmick and his fellow vampires.

Smoke sends Sammie home before setting an ambush for Hogwood and his men. The Klansmen are all killed in the shootout, but Smoke is fatally shot. Sammie disregards his father's pleas to seek salvation and travels to Chicago.

Stack reveals that Smoke spared him at the joint on the condition that Sammie be allowed to live out his life in peace.
