Richard's despicable writer's mind improvises a stark Victorian melodrama entitled "My Fate", in which Elise departs from the hotel as scheduled, leaving him behind. Penniless, he takes a job in the hotel kitchen washing dishes. Thirty years later, after become a white haired man babbling about lost love, topples head first into a tub of soapy water and drowns.
