Professor Grady Tripp picks up his editor and his editor's new transvestite friend at the airport. At Walter Gaskell's party, Gaskell's wife Sara, with whom Grady has been having an affair, tells Grady that she's pregnant. Grady's creative writing student James Leer steals Marilyn Monroe's jacket from Walter's bedroom, then shoots Walter's dog when he attacks Grady.
