While there is some debate regarding the precise year (the calendar and Wizard of Oz references indicate 1939, while Ralphie's decoder ring and Red Ryder model indicate 1940), the deciding factor is the 2022 sequel, which is set in 1973, and explicitly states it occurs 33 years after the events of the original movie, making the year 1940.
